Haines, AK – July 24
We have a scheduled excursion with our caravan group. We have to meet at the dock to board a double-decker katermaran to travel from Haines to Skagway, AK for the day. The water is not too rough today, therefore I am able to safely sail with the group and not feed any fish.
When we arrived at the boat dock, Judi and I noticed right away that the old wooden dock was in need of some much needed attention. The Lutak Dock was built in 1953 by the U.S. Corp of Army Engineers. They have been warned that this structure needs facial work, if it does not get done, it will be condemned completely.
We boarded our boat and headed off to Skagway. Today on our agenda was a little scenery, mountains, waterfalls, then came the cruise shipped parked in Skagway. After we exited the boat, we had time to wander the area until our scheduled train ride on the White Pass. During our free time, we had shops to wander in and out of. This place is a tourist trap, it reminds me of going to Mackinac City or Mackinac Island in Michigan. After a short time, we were done with the stores. Our group, Kevin & Jennifer, Mike & Diane, and Judi & I went to have lunch and drinks before the train ride.
Our group was moved from the train depot to a small patch near the train crossing to ensure all 45 of us were together in one specific train car. Judi was being picked on by Jimmy about her height. What is a girl to do when she is only 5 foot tall. While we did pass over bridges and through tunnels, I am happy to report, we did not cross on the old wooden train bridge that is falling down!
After our train ride, we had to hoof it back quickly to the boat docks to catch our boat back to Haines. We just barely caught the boat. I am not sure if everyone in our group made it on that trip or had to wait for another trip.
On our return boat trip the wind was a bit strong as you can see from my hair being blown straight back. We ended up getting a group photo on the boat of many of the women in our caravan group. In our group photo, we have Susi Cubed! On each side of me is another Susan, both of which used to go by Susie. My name badge was whipping Susan in the face and she had to hold it down during the photo.
Later in the evening, close to sunset, if it really ever sets in Alaska, we went looking for bear! Rather that finding bears and taking pictures, we took lots of pictures of the kayaks, the sea plane, mountains, etc. We were just having fun taking different photos and testing our camera abilities. Judi and I both took opportunities to share some ideas and secrets with our friend Susan from Wisconsin.
We also got some great Eagle pictures.
My loving sister had to get photos of me taking photos; also of Susan and I sharing photos via AirDrop. My AirDrop is really temperamental.
