Duluth, MN was our destination after Hancock, MI; I really had no clue what we would do with our time. I had asked several people during the winter while planning ‘What should we do or see?’. Best answers I got was to visit Mall of America, that was NOT happening. It turned out we had a great time exploring and probably could have had more than our two nights. Maybe some day we will go explore again. On our arrival night we stayed at the campground and just chilled. Our stay at Indian Point Campground was good, but our campsite was a challenge to get into. I might add it was a “pull-through” site, should have been easy breezy, but wait you had a tight turn into the spot with a power stand that has already been hit by campers before we arrived. Judi and I worked it through and we go into the tight spot. In hindsight I should have just backed into the spot.

We used our GuideAlong app for the Lake Superior North Shore Hwy 61. We started in the downtown district at the Lake Shore Park, on our way back from the park to downtown area, we got caught by the bridge which had a ship leaving the harbor into Lake Superior. We were able to watch the Great Republic exit the harbor between the lighthouses. Judi and I once did a vacation where we toured lighthouses so we always are looking for them on the Great Lakes.

As we continue our guided tour on Hwy 61, we came to waterfalls, lighthouses, overlooks and tunnels through the hills rather than on the edge of the lakeshore. We also came to an overlook on the lake where a group of crazy people were preparing to rappel down a cliff to the lake, this is definitely not something Judi or I would ever do.
We also had some stops where Winnie was able to get out and play in the water.

My favorite was catching the SS Great Republic on Lake Superior as we traveled up the shoreline. At one point, another ship was headed into Duluth and the two ships passed each other making it look like one extra large ship. By the way, the Great Republic was headed to Silver Bay with a load of taconite Apparently, its routine is to haul it from Silver Bay to Duluth.
Stay tuned for Alaska Bound – Day 7!
