Alaska Bound – Day 32 – Caravan Day 14

We are still in the Fairbanks, AK area. We are all thankful that we don’t have to travel for a few days.

Today’s adventure was a ride on a riverboat, named Discovery III, where we got to see and learn about the Chena River area.

Along the river ride we watch a demonstration of a bush pilot and float plane as he took off and landed on the river. He makes deliveries in the remote areas around Fairbanks.

We also were able to see the local Sled Dog home where they have puppies who will learn to be a sled dog. They were learning to jump logs. The older dogs ran a training exercise where they get hooked up on their leads and pull the trainer on a 4-wheel ATV which does not have a motor. After their training, they get released and go play in the river water as a reward.

Next was the Chena Village Living Museum. We learned of the Athabascan Village where we were able to see caribou, how to clean and store fish which are mostly used for feeding the dogs. We walked around their camp which have samples of housing and the tribal wears. The detail on their clothing is amazing as well as the fur hoods that would keep them warm in the winters.

After our ride, we returned to the dock where we had a family style lunch of stew, salad, roasted vegetables, and desert.

After lunch, we board our bus which then took us to the University of Alaska to roam the Museum of the North. They also have an art gallery and a planitarium.

Stay tuned for more adventures…

Wow, what a great adventure you all are having. Can’t wait to see you in the fall. It’s a ghost town here. But I’m enjoying the guilt. Bon-Bon
