Day 18 of the RV Caravan and we are headed out on a bus to look for wild animals in the Denali National Park and Preserve. There is a small portion (15 miles) of the park that we can access by car, then other areas you have to have a special permit or go on a tour. There is a bridge that is being reconstructed in the park that someday will allow visitors to go further yet. The bridge is a 475 foot steel truss bridge. The bridge is expected to be open to traffic in 2027.
Our bus driver was a bit gruff in the beginning, barking out all the rules for the trip. I thought maybe she and the wagonmaster of our trip might have to duke it out. The bus also had one couple from a cruise ship with our entire group. The husband was showing signs of illness and got progressively worse as the day continued. I don’t know what he had, but magically we had people come down with a flu bug just days later. Good news, Judi and I did not catch that illness!
One of the rules on the bus was if you say any animal or bird to yell STOP! She said she would stop to allow us opportunities to look, take photos, and she had a “powerful” video camera to zoom in and share on the busses internal video screens. She did stop some, but not always or she would start rolling the bus forward because she was not seeing what others did on the bus.
We did see hares, caribou, moose on the loose, bears, eagles, golden eagles, ptarmigans, and mountain sheep. While we did not see the animals as close as we wanted, we did see a fair amount.
While walking Winnie in Denali, we found a cute Little Rock garden. I am sure this will give some of my creative friends new ideas.
