Seward, AK – July 11

Alaska Sea Life Center & Puffin Experience

Today, we are touring the Alaska Sea Life Center when they are doing a private presentation on their facilities, the care they provide to wild sea life in need of assistance and introducing us to Puffins.

The center is located in Seward’s waterfront park. This also happens to be Mile Zero of the Iditarod Trail. 

Our presenter brought in two varieties of birds, which she communicates very well with the feathered friends and can tell when they need treats, when they are stressed and when they need to cool down. First we had a Horned Puffin. The second was a Pigeon Guillemot. You had to beware of the needs when they had too many treats because you may be wearing the after effects of the treats! Which our presenter did get to wear, EEEwww Gross!

In the center we were able to see a variety of sea life, some you could actually touch. I chose not to touch them.  They had both inside and outside exhibits, the view from outside was spectacular. 

We also watched as a trainer was working with a sea lion teaching a new trick. She worked in short bursts of time. Attempt a trick, then send him topside for a treat. We watched this for what seemed like forever. It was fun watching. 

After the sea life center, Judi and I walked up through town and to a farmers market taking place. We mostly were “window shopping”.

The last photos are the view from our campground. Look at that beautiful mountain with the waterfall. I know the could is blocking some of it.
