Tok, AK – July 21

This is a travel day from Valdez, AK to Tok, AK – 254 miles.

Yes, we have been to Tok already on our trip, but you don’t get many roads in Alaska and sometimes you have to repeat towns to get to your actual destination. Our goal will be to get to Haines, AK. We have to break up the trip into multiple days otherwise it is way too many miles and driving hours to get to our goal destination. With all of the dipsy-doodles and mountain climbing or descending, you must take overnight stops.

We are returning to Tok RV Village. Something to take note of this area was devastated by wildfire after our trip. The Mukluk fire started on August 17, this fire as of today (August 25) is only 29% contained and has burned 7,260 acres.

As we left Valdez, we were able to see the waterfalls of Bridal Veil and Horsetail one more time. The drive really was very beautiful. One thing that we ran into on our drive was either fog or driving through the clouds. Either way, the density got so think that I lost the motorhome in front of me! EEKS Jimmy, you were just in front of me, where did you go? So if I cannot see him, that means the person behind me was unable to see me. That was a stressful moment. Driving up a steep mountain grade, blindly in the fog/cloud cover. I was so happy when I could see again.

Have I told you that Winnie is a great traveler in the motorhome? She gets in her bed between Judi and I, she sleeps. If she starts getting restless, I know that means we need to find a stopping zone as she needs to go potty. This means I get a potty break too! Judi will take Winnie for a walk, but sometimes she will not do what she needs to do because she wants to know where her momma is at and make sure she is not left behind.

We took in more beautiful scenery and again drove past the Wrangell and St. Elias National Parks. You also have to love when your travel log tells you that Thompson Pass is a very narrow section of road with no shoulder!

Good News! We made it safely back to Tok, AK. Our wagonmasters and Tailgunners provided us with Pizza around the campfire for dinner. We also had a travel meeting. Tomorrow, we head out to Destruction Bay, Yukon Territory.

Stay tuned for more adventures…
